Sensitive Skin

Yikes! On Friday or so, Micah started getting dry, itchy-looking skin. By Sunday he had this going on:

It is covering him, literally from the top of his head, down to the bottoms of his feet. Covering his bum, scrotum, palms of his hands, his thighs and shoulders are the worst, and it covers his face (especially across the nose and cheeks) much like freckles.

I had lots of theories, and was pretty certain it was caused by our recent change in laundry detergent, but the doctor shot that down today by pointing out that it was in many places that his clothing wouldn't touch (like inside his diaper, on his feet and hands, and face). Perhaps an allergic reaction? Except that he hasn't complained about it once, he hasn't scratched it or pulled at his clothing, and he isn't on any meds, nor has he eaten any new foods.
Not Hand, Foot, Mouth since it's especially bad across his back (unheard of, apparently) and isn't in his mouth or nose at all.

She just sent us home with instructions to get some cream for his skin, and a "Good luck" sucker for each of the boys. Also, Grey hasn't gotten it, even though they literally have the same DNA, so it seems like it's not an allergic reaction, or a virus. Right?

Anyway. Any diagnoses?

No advice or idea. I get that on my leg sometimes. But mine itches like the dickens. What I wanted to say was, "Look how big his feet are!" He's going to be so tall! These boys are so big! :)

My 2yo had the same thing a month or two ago, just not all over his body. Limited to his legs and tush, and not itchy at all. I was freaking out about hand-foot-mouth (because I was in my first trimester at the time with #2) but it turned out it was probably just eczema. We have some really high quality lotion (Cerave) so we put that on for a couple of days and it went away. A dermatologist once told my husband re: his very dry cracking hands, if you're going to use moisturizer to legitimately moisturize, use something that says hand CREAM, not hand LOTION, because lotion is basically like licking your lips and is not going to solve anything. Ever since then we've kept a ready supply (a big tub) of Cerave in the house for all dry skin ailments. Another one that works wonders is Aquaphor, but that feels more slimy due to all the petroleum jelly in it. But I tell you, it does the job. Especially on little noses that are red from lots of tissue wiping.

I never comment and completely off topic (I hope he feels better soon!), but I saw this and thought of you. My 4.5 year old is obsessed with HP right now! http://www.etsy.com/listing/112916569/harry-potter-inspired-quiet-book-pattern?ref=sr_gallery_16&ga_search_query=harry+potter&ga_order=most_relevant&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_page=3&ga_search_type=handmade

Looks like hives but if doc says no, then no. could just be a virus but very odd and yes, too much to be HFM. My son had it twice when he was little and dear old me got it once.

Even though your doc said no to it being a reaction to the new laundry detergent that is exactly the type of rash I get when I have an allergic reaction to a new detergent/soap/dryer sheet etc. It's not always itchy, though it can be especially if I get hot and sweaty.

And as for doc saying it wouldn't be in his diaper area/hands/feet because clothes don't touch there - that's a load of bull. I can react to a dish soap that has only been in contact with my hands and wrists and will have spots of rash on my neck, collarbone, stomach, and thighs. A reaction on the skin doesn't have to be isolated to where the contact site is - enough contact in one area can make skin all over the body react.

Poor boy. If a doctor can't diagnose it than that is frustrating, as it leaves you to now worry and want to go searching. They are too wide spread and small to be bed bugs. Maybe he brushed up on a strange bush or plant somewhere. Maybe time will tell. I'm sorry. It is always horrible to not be able to do anything.

Could still be detergent. :) Depends on the strength of the response, not where the clothes were always. Did he have a long day in the sun? That can happen, I forget what it is called, but if it is like a "first big sun" kind of day, sometimes you can get this response. Probably just viral...glad he is comfortable! :)

I agree with the allergic reaction - it can show up anywhere! Switch back or to some fragrance-sulfate-free stuff and see what happens!

I've had a lot of luck with coconut oil for mysterious rashes. Rubbing it on, not eating it. Actually I would probably try washing it with tea tree oil soap and then applying coconut oil as much as possible. Might be worth a try?

Eczema! It usually is just red and large patches but that looks like it. My son has it and it gets horrible in the Summer and Winter. I have to change his onesie at night after his bath and in the morning to avoid sweat causing heat rash which makes it worse. I lotion him with special lotions 4-5 times a day. I've heard there are natural changes you can make to their diet but my son's to picky. I've also heard that a natural soap can make a difference, so it could be your detergent and it just spread from Summer heat.

Go To A Pediatric Dermayologist If It Doesn't Go Away. UofU Has Some Good Ones.

My Son Had A Rash Like That On His Back & My Ped. Had No Idea What It Was. I Went To A Derm. And It Turned Out That It Want Just A Rash, but But A DiseasE.

I'm a few days late, but anyways... My boys both get this constantly! They have sensitive skin and when it's hot they get covered in the rash everywhere. Usually I just let them have a couple extra baths (not hot, but) and dress them a bit lighter.

Has it stayed? Or gone away yet?

Any news on this? Did the doctor consider fifths disease? Obviously I am no doctor, but it looked just like that when I had it as a child!

My kids have gotten this before when they have a cold at the same time. Doctor told me that they were allergic to their virus. But, if it is eczema, i recommend monkey balm. It is all natural and completely awesome. Clears up eczema in three days.
